Your vehicle engine needs regular replacement of automotive lubricant for efficient functioning. The automotive lubricant reduces the friction between engine parts and prevents it from corrosion and overheating.

It’s important to choose the right automotive lubricant for your vehicle. Using the wrong automotive lubricant affects the overall performance of your vehicle. That’s why you have to identify and choose the right automotive lubricant to maximize engine life and efficiency.

Sometimes, the entire process of finding the right automotive lubricant is daunting as there are so many lubricants available in the market. So, how do you identify and choose the right automotive lubricant for your vehicle?

Well, we can determine the quality of an automotive lubricant by a number of parameters shown on the product label. They provide additional information about the properties of automotive lubricants. Here, are the key things on the product label that you need to look for while choosing the right automotive lubricant.

International Standard Specifications

The automotive lubricants are tested and classified by regulatory bodies after their production. There are various international standards such as API, ACEA, JASO, ILSAC that regulates the standard as well as maintain the quality of lubricants and oil. In order to choose the right automotive lubricant, you need to consider whether the product meets the approved international standard.

In addition to this, you can check the vehicle owners manual. The vehicle manufacturer usually recommends a specific oil (if needed) that suits the particular vehicle type for its optimal performance.

Oil Viscosity

Viscosity refers to the oils’ resistance to flow. The viscosity of the oil decreases with increasing temperature and vice-versa.

The best kind of lubricant must retain its viscosity in the changing temperatures. This means the oil must remain smooth and continuous in frigid temperature so that the engine would start easily at any climate. In the same way, the oil must remain viscous during the summer or extreme heat to reduce the friction of moving parts.

Petronas Automotive Lubricant

For instance,  as shown in the figure above the first and second numbers  15 and 40 on the Petronas product label refers to the viscosity of engine oil at cold and hot temperature respectively.

Characteristics of Lubricants

There are two types of lubricants: Fuel economy lubricants and low SAPS lubricants.

Fuel economy lubricants use a special formula designed for the high performance of the engine. They are fuel efficient in comparison to conventional oils.

Similarly, Low SAPS lubricants contain low levels of sulphated ash, phosphorous, and sulphur. These oils are recommended for a modern diesel engine vehicle.

Besides these, there are lubricants made for specific purpose of a vehicle such as high tech engine, off-road vehicle, high mileage and many more. Depending upon your vehicle specific purpose, you can choose the automotive lubricant that matches with the recommendation of your vehicle.
